Redefining value: Why physical activity infrastructure is more than a cost

As communities around the world continue to navigate complex health, economic, and environmental challenges, one powerful solution lies in plain sight: physical activity and recreation infrastructure. But are we valuing it correctly? On Tuesday, 28 October, at the 29th IAKS Congress, we invite you to join a pivotal discussion on the public value and Social Return on Investment (SROI) of these essential facilities. This session promises to reshape the way we understand, measure, and communicate the true impact of physical activity infrastructure.

Moving from cost to strategic investment

Ron Zubrik, Managing Director at Torch Advisory (Australia), will challenge the traditional mindset that sees recreation infrastructure as merely a cost. Instead, he advocates for a shift in narrative—one that frames these spaces as strategic investments in community wellbeing, economic development, and public health.
In his presentation, Ron will share practical tools and actionable insights to help professionals assess and articulate the broader value of sport and leisure assets. Attendees can expect to gain fresh perspectives on how to build a stronger case for investment in physical activity infrastructure - one grounded in measurable social outcomes.

Adding to this vital conversation, Matt Body, Senior Associate at Warren and Mahoney (New Zealand), will take a deeper look into how we define success in our facilities. Rather than relying solely on traditional quantitative metrics, like foot traffic or square footage, Matt encourages a human-centred approach.
His presentation will focus on measuring social impact, demonstrating how qualitative data around individual and societal wellbeing can reshape our benchmarks for success. By reframing our values in this way, we can drive the conversation forward and better deliver on the promise of inclusive, impactful recreation spaces.
